Scott has covered the Central Division and Pacific Division.
I will be covering the Atlantic and Metropolitan Divisions in the East.
In this post I’m covering the Atlantic.
This division last year saw the Florida Panthers win it. They won by one point, over the Boston Bruins.
It saw the Panthers, Bruins, Leafs and Lightning make it through to the playoffs. The Red Wings were brutally unlucky not to make it through.
Sabres and Canadiens finished bottom at 78 and 76 points, respectively.
Here are the average odds for the teams to win their division:
- Panthers: 3.10
- Leafs: 3.50
- Lightning: 5.50
- Bruins: 5.50
- Red Wings: 12.00
- Senators: 12.00
- Sabres: 14.00
- Canadiens: 76.00

Atlantic Division Winners Betting Tips
If you’re a regular here, you’ll know that I use a lot of data analytics when it comes to my picks. Even with personnell changes both on and off the ice, there is a lot of consistency when it comes to the metrics season by season so I’ve used that as a focus.
I will be picking the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the division.
I was close with the Panthers but I’ll explain why I didn’t go with them in a second. The Leafs focused on defense this Summer, and that was their weakest point. Their offense in a few key metrics fall behin the Panthers last year, but I think those changes will result in success this year for the Leafs. Love the pickup of Ekman-Larsson in particular, and Stolarz as well.
Atlantic Division Betting Analysis
Florida Panthers:
It will be between the Leafs and Panthers I expect. However the Panthers have lost a fair amount of depth which you need at that mid-point of the season. I’m not too concerned about Tarasenko and Okposo, but Mountour and Ekman-Larsson are big losses which will hurt them. The player metrics for those two in particular were key to the Panthers success, and I think defensively they will have issues.
Tampa Bay Lightning:
I don’t even know if Tampa will make the decision. They look like a changing team. I’m surprised bookies have them so high. They have had some key turnover in the Summer and I think they’re going to be a disappointment this year.
Boston Bruins:
Lindholm is a solid pickup as is Zadorov and I think they will fit in well here. Boston impressed a lot last season, and Swayman just signed his new contract which is huge. They should contend for sure but I don’t think these changes are enough to push them to #1.
Detroit Red Wings:
The Red Wings big issue last season was defense. Their forwards also shot a bit above their weight. I don’t think they did what is necessary to guarantee a playoff spot this year. I’ll be honest – I really, really don’t like the moves they made during the off-season and think that it will hinder the team.
Ottawa Senators:
Fun pickup in Ullmark. Sens had the 11th best xGA last year, but 5th worst GA/60. Says it all right there and that will be a big help for them. I like what they have did, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they make the playoffs this year.
Buffalo Sabres:
Nothing too much jumps out about Buffalo. They were a below average team in every metric last year, and I don’t see much changing for them this year.
Montreal Canadiens:
The Laine injury sucks, but this team already has a lot of issues. Some of the worst CF & FF%, GF%, xG% etc etc. Hopefully for my sakes this group gels, but I think it’s going to be a very piss poor season for Habs fans.
