Some great action in the NHL yesterday with some really tight games.
The Blue Jackets stepped up big time after that monster overtime game to come in 3-1 winners over Tampa.
The Blackhawks gave it their all against the Knights however the Knights won 4-3 in OT. Let’s hope the Blackhawks continue to do so for exciting games.
The Hurricanes came out on top over the Bruins as the 2nd underdog winner today. And in a practical coinflip of a game, the Stars beat the Flames 5-4 in a 9 goal thriller.
Just a hell of a day of hockey. Let’s hope today is nice and good too as we have five games on the board. Thoughts go out to Claude Julien who was hospitalized this week.
Coyotes vs Avalanche Betting Tips:
Graeme: The Coyotes got their clocks cleaned 3-0 in the first game with a huge 3 goals in 83 seconds. At 2.70 odds to win, the bookies don’t foresee a bounce back. It was a very poor offensive performance overall by the Coyotes who couldn’t even register above 1 on the xG in 5 vs 5.
This is a tough one because I like the Avs here. Kuemper had to perform very well that last game. However that sort of price in the playoffs against a team that scuppered the Preds the way they did? Hard to ignore that. I dunno the line just seems a bit reactive to that game. I certainly don’t see many reasons to bet the Coyotes but I’ve got to think this is an +EV bet at that price. Placing this bet purely for perceived value. If you want some actual reasoning – Coyotes got held to 17 shots against the Devils then put up 44 next game. 19 against the Kings, then 30 next game. 18-33, 19-40. 14-41. Of course that’s not something I’d hang my hat on but hopefully we see a stronger offensive performance. Coyotes to win incl OT/SO. This is one that I will not be surprised if it ends up being a loser. I’d just be regretting it if I didn’t take them at this price. In saying that I wouldn’t take the Hawks at this price.

Scott: After game one and the way the game was scoreless until the Avs buried 3 and the fact that Colorado held the Coyotes to only 14 shots has me thinking this may be a short series.
Until the Coyotes can show me otherwise I’ll be backing the Avalanche.

Canadiens vs Flyers Betting Tips:
Graeme: Well I was all set to take the Flyers in regulation again when the Julien situation happened. You just never know how that will affect a team. With Game 1 I felt the Habs offense had some excellent changes however Hart looked fantastic out there. As did Carey of course. Flyers vets have to be feeling good though having a good goalie behind them. I am not seeing any goalie saves props anywhere which is annoying.
I think we’ll see a more desperate performance from the Habs and hopefully that means more shots. I’ll do Brendan Gallagher Over 3.5 Shots on Goal even though he generally goes hot and cold with that. Good chance of OT which is a factor too. To be honest I’m really hoping this one comes in to motivate me to look into player props more as I much prefer those from an analytical perspective. Just can take a bit more work.

Scott: Carey Price was good including making an incredible save which seemed impossible but the Habs will need to do more to reward their keeper.
Carter Hart looked good making 27 saves and as long as he can keep up his good goaltending, the Flyers should be able to keep rolling along in this series.
With the game being only a 2-1 result, game 2 may be another close one. I like the Flyers to win again but not confident enough to take them in regulation and the odds aren’t good for a win including OT. I’ll avoid a tip for this game.

Canucks vs Blues Betting Tips:
Graeme: Loved that performance from the Canucks in Game 1. And now they’re underdogs? If you look at the stats individually many Canucks players are just getting better and better such as Horvat. I could for sure see the Blues bouncing back but I’m good with taking the dog here in what I feel is a real 50/50 one. Canucks win incl OT

Scott: Wow. The Canucks looked amazing in game 1. They scored early and often and looked like the veteran team vs the Blues instead of a group of youngsters.
I still have faith in the Blues and their experience after last years Cup win. They will need to be better defensively and they have the team to do it. Sure most people may disagree with me but I’m again taking the Blues

Islanders vs Capitals Betting Tips:
Graeme: Caps are favourites here but not overwhelmingly so. Islanders had a big comeback in Game 1 and so this should be a good game. I backed the over 5.5 in the last one and looking at it I’m happy to go with it again. The odds on over 5 are worth the play so I don’t have to rely on the variance of an empty netter. I get the feeling this is going to be a hard hitting game with a lot of penalties. Over 5 Goals incl OT

Scott: The Isles came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2. There was some rough stuff which Tom Wilson didn’t like and we had a scrap which may make game 2 even better to watch.
The Caps have to make a comeback and pick up the win in this game. They can’t go down 2-0 in the first round.

Stars vs Flames Betting Tips:
Graeme: This is one that is really looking like it’s going to be 50/50 all the way doesn’t it? It was nice to see the Stars offense come alive. Heiskanen was so damn good in that game and was the difference maker. I dunno when I look at these teams I still like the Flames here. No major reason except looking through all the metrics I just feel they are the better team. Flames incl OT. I do like Scotts logic of just taking turns backing a team as well because that’s sometimes just the way hockey works out.
Scott: Game 2 was yesterday and it was a good one. Dube scored again to open the game and the Stars answered with 3 straight. In the end it was the Stars winning 5-4.
They are back at it again today and ill go with the Flames as it looks to be a back and forth series
