The first Saturday night hockey action of the new season was a great one, with some stellar games.
Habs vs Leafs was an 11 goal thriller. Leafs had a big lead but then took their foot off the gas before forcing OT. Habs won in a shootout.
Panthers/Lightning went over as we hoped. The gamescript was a bit different than expected initially with a quiet first period. The game got going through in the 2nd and with both teams battling and wanting the win, it went over.
Props to Tampa for sticking strong though. The timing of a goal can be everything (ie: Jets goal at the end of the 2nd period against the Flyers) and for a lot of teams gearing up for a big 3rd period – to concede within 20 seconds could kill a team off. Very nice to see Tampa keep battling even if they couldn’t get the win.
Some tight West Coast games too with the Oilers getting a fighting victory over the Kings. I was disappointed to see the Canucks get thumped like that. Hoping for a bit more of them this season.
Nice to see Pittsburgh bounce back and makes me wonder if the Sabres are going to be a contender this season. That’s my favourite part of the beginning of the season – reassessing each team game after game and learning a bit more about them and how they are going to fare this season.
We have a quieter Sunday with three games on the board. Lightning and Canes kick it off at 5pm EST. Stars seek their first win against the Red Wings, and the Jets are on the road as they take on the Islanders.
Lightning vs Hurricanes Betting Tips:
If you’ve been following us over the years, you’ll know that we have gravitated away from betting the unders in a hockey game. In terms of game totals it’s usually “over or nothing”. We just find it extremely tricky betting unders, as appealing as they can be these days with the game totals that much higher than previous years.
They’re also just not a FUN bet to make. While we’re betting to make money we’re also betting for entertainment. If we had the Under in that Florida/Tampa game last night? That would have sucked. Instead of cheering on a Tampa comeback and goals etc it’s basically squeaky bum time then you just feel deflated when that goal goes on.
I’m writing all this because in this game I’m tipping the under however want you to know beforehand how uncomfortable I feel doing that.
It’s early in the season. Both these teams are on a back to back in a slightly earlier game. I just get the feeling there won’t be much energy in the game. I like the Hurricanes saving Mrazek for this game. Tampa probably has McElhinney in net against his former team. Going up against his former team maybe that will motivate him to step it up a notch.
Tampa do have a lethal offense and they may be motivated strong on the bounce back. Hurricanes had the most shots on net last season and from the looks of things they’ll probably be right up there again. So those are two negatives. But I’m backing lethargy to trump all.

KHL Betting Tips: 0.5u on Salavat/HC Vityas money line double. 2.42 odds.
WHL Betting Tips: Feel like I must be missing something with this line. Warriors should be heavier favourites. Not just the results but the schedule. Very very weird line. But 1u on Moose Jaw Warriors in reg at 1.80 odds. Stepanov isn’t that big of a factor. Owen hardy is a nice pickup too. I must be missing something big here. So buyer beware!
